Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

It’s been a while since I’ve updated my blog and it is because I have been hard at work on my latest project: Social Flirtr. It allows twitter users to socialize and meet (flirt) new like minded people online. Social Flirtr is in Alpha stage, William Estoque (my partner) and I are hard at work adding new features, new design and overall improvements to the site. The site is awesome. Snowboarding: How to Choose Snowboard Bindings

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

One of the most important parts of selecting a snowboard involves deciding on the type of bindings that you want to use. Snowboarding bindings are an integral part of snowboarding since the binding is what will keep you attached to your board. There are several different boot/bindings combinations that you can choose from. Your choice will depend on your comfort level as well as your skill level. ?????? ????? ????

The four main types of snowboard bindings include: strap bindings, plate bindings, step in bindings and hybrid bindings. Strap bindings fasten to your boot with the use of two sets of straps. Plate bindings are metal bindings that will only work with hard boots. Step in bindings allow the rider to simply step into the binding and lock onto the board. Hybrid bindings use a sheet of fabric to lock the boot onto the board. They also have a rear spoiler that allows the rider to easily enter the board.

Strap bindings are by far the most popular type for snowboarders. They feel comfortable and can be worn with soft boots. It allows for flexible and easy mobility while snowboarding. The main disadvantage is that buckling and unbuckling can seem time consuming between rides.

On the other hand, step in bindings allow you to get on and off of your board in a quicker manner. You simple lock in and out between rides without the need to operate any straps. You’ll need to wear step in boots with step in bindings in order for the system to work properly. Boots can be hard or soft.
?????? ????? ????
For the most control, snowboarders can choose plate bindings with hard boots. Each move that you make with this type of binding will correspond to the way that you ride.

Hybrids feel similar to strap bindings, but have the extra advantage of not requiring the wearer to take the time to strap in.

Windows 7 Beta on a Mac

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Over the weekend I downloaded Windows 7 and ran it on my Macbook Pro (Latest mac released October 08) using VMware. So I ran it the first time using only 1 processor and 512mb of ram and I was impressed. The first thing I must say is that Internet Explorer 8 is fast. It loads up in no time at all. I was very impressed of the speed of the whole OS’s Speed especailly because I was using only 512mb of ram.

So after testing the speed the next thing I did was look to see if all the features I’ve been reading about were there. The only thing that would work is the shake and clear windows. This is the feature where you shake a window you have open and all the other windows minimize. It will take some getting used to but it could become very useful. I also couldn’t get Aero to work properly and I believe it has something to do with me using VMware to run it virtually.

The Dock & System was my next favorite thing. Windows 7 is taking a huge step towards usability and speed. Although the dock looks very similar to the dock on Mac OS X Leopard it actually is quite useful. You could pin items to the dock and by right clicking you can see all windows open within that program. Which help save space and free up clutter.

The next thing I did was test out what Windows 7 would be like on two 2.4ghz processor and 2gigs of RAM and man is it fast. Although booting up was a bit slow(agian this is probably due to VMware starting up virtualization). This time I used Windows 7 Beta 1 I did run into a problem with connecting to a wifi network. It seems that they changed the way you connect to a wifi network from how it is on Vista and I still can’t figure it out.

Overall, I think Windows 7 is a dramatical increase from Windows Vista especalliy because of speed and usability.

Snowboarding: Clothes to Wear While Snowboarding

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Before you hit the slopes, you’ll have to consider the attire that you will wear while snowboarding. Although you may want to look stylish, you should consider warmth and comfort above all other factors. You’ll also have to learn how to dress for the changing weather that can occur while snowboarding.

The most important part of dressing for snowboarding is layering your clothing. On cold days, you’re going to want to wear multiple layers in order to stay warm while snowboarding. For the first layer, you’ll want to wear a pair of thermal long underwear. Over the long underwear, you’re going to put on a very warm sweater. Snowboarders usually wear fleece or wool sweaters for optimum warmth. You can purchase snowboarding pants that are water resistant as well as fully lined. You’ll also want to wear a heavy ski jacket if the weather’s cold in order to stay warm. Remember to also wear heavy socks and a warm hat. If you wear a helmet while snowboarding, you can wear the hat underneath it. A neck gator can cover your face and neck while snowboarding. You can also wear multiple pairs of socks to keep dry and warm.

If the weather’s warm, you can make adjustments to your clothing choices. You can still dress in layers, but you can lose the heavy long underwear and simply wear a t-shirt, lightweight pants and ski pants. You’ll still want to wear a jacket, but a spring jacket is likely more appropriate for warmer snowboarding. They also make lighter gloves, often referred as pipe gloves by snowboarders. You can likely forgo the hat in the warmer weather, but still wear the helmet if you desire.

Some other tips include avoiding any cotton clothing while snowboarding since cotton absorbs water. You can also wear additional safety gear items while snowboarding, like goggles, knee pads, wrist guards and rear pads.

Adventure: Mountain Biking Gear

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Mountain biking is an exciting sport that promises to get your adrenaline pumping and your heart racing as you twist around the trail and experience the beauty of nature. But as with most sports, proper equipment is required to ensure the maximum amount of safety and enjoyment for the journey.

The most important piece of equipment that you need is, obviously, the mountain bike. Purchasing the right mountain bike for you, though, can be a bit difficult. It should be a dedicated mountain bike, not a hybrid. You should be able to reach the handlebars while bending forward without feeling cramped, and the handlebars should be positioned slightly below the seat to create better balance. Experts at the bike shop should be able to help you choose the correct mountain bike.

Of utmost importance is a helmet, since you should always use a helmet every time you use your mountain bike. Not using a helmet is dangerous, usually against the rules of most parks, and very unwise. Make sure that the helmet that you purchase fits correctly as to not make it uncomfortable and a burden to wear.

You should always have plenty of water with you to avoid dehydration. At least two bottles of water is recommended, since your body will lose a lot of water along the trip. Proper hydration is important as to not risk the dangerous side effects that accompany the combination of dehydration and excess physical activity. Appropriate clothing is also necessary. Make sure you are aware of the kind of weather on the trail, which is most likely going to be different than where you live. Consult local experts if necessary to ensure that you are not caught in the elements without proper clothing.

The aforementioned equipment is absolutely necessary, but there are several pieces of equipment that are highly recommended. Compact air pumps for your bike’s wheels are important. Gloves, padded biking shorts, and mountain biking shoes prevent annoying chaffing and blisters that may appear otherwise. A toolkit containing everything you would need to repair your bike is a good idea. Sunglasses are nice if you are riding in a sunny area. Finally, a first aid kit is important should you get hurt along the trail.

Surfing: Best Places to Surf Jamaica

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Jamaica is known for its rich culture and beautiful scenery as an island nation located in the beautiful Caribbean Sea. Its tropical climate, with agreeable temperatures all year long, certainly has an influence on its high amounts of tourism. Surfers especially love Jamaica because of its world-class waves and pristine beaches, and there are certain spots in the country that are notably superior.

The Boston Bay Beach is a surfer’s dream destination. With some of the biggest waves in Jamaica, you can most definitely count on riding an epic wave or two before your stay in the country is over. You can also find plenty of surf amenities in and around the beach, like surf lessons, surf shops, and local food for picnics. Most importantly, though, for those who have had to wait patiently for the crowds to thin, is the fact that the Boston Bay Beach is not packed to the gills with angry locals and self-entitled tourists. All-in-all, the Boston Bay Beach is a great place to go for a surfer who wants to experience what Jamaican surfing is all about.

Experienced surfers will definitely enjoy Canon Cave. Expect a walk to get from where you park to the beach, but when you get there, you will not be disappointed. There are hardly any crowds to fight through, but there are plenty of waves that are some of the best that the country has to offer. Although Canon Cave is somewhat hard to find, it has the advantage of being empty throughout much of the year, which is certainly good for those that are in the know. Powerful waves and fairly consistent swells mean that surfers will enjoy it.

World-class waves are to be enjoyed at DNA, but only very experienced surfers need come out. The surf is regular and the waves are powerful, so the surfer should have no problem should his skill level be up to par. On a good day, the waves are long and very surfable, making it one of the better surfing spots in the country. But do brush up on your technique, or you may find yourself getting a bit too acquainted with the rocks and sea urchins.

Snowboarding: Muscles Used While Snowboarding

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Many boarders hit the slopes because they enjoy the thrill of the ride. Others not only want to have fun, but to also get a workout in. It is a well known fact that snowboarding is not only a great calorie burner (recreational snowboarders burn an average of 250-650 calories per hour while professional snowboarders can burn an average of 700 calories or more), but also an awesome way to tone your muscles.

You’ll mostly use muscles in your lower body while snowboarding. It’s probably a good idea to perform some basic stretches before going out for the day on your snowboard. Calf, quad and hamstring stretches will help ease any muscle ache that you may develop while boarding. You should plan to spend approximately fifteen minutes prior to snowboarding, getting a few stretches in. While guiding the board down the slopes, you’ll mainly use your hamstrings and quadriceps. Professional snowboarders have very well defined quads and hamstrings. You’ll also use your abdominal muscles when you’re steering and getting back onto the snowboard. Core muscles are frequently used when making any sort of turn while heading down the mountain. The core muscles are often used when performing any sort of trick as well.

To control your speed while traveling down the mountain, you’ll use your calf muscles. As the strength in your calf muscles build up, you’ll develop better coordination while on your board. Muscles in your feet and ankles are used to control your balance while using your snowboard. You’ll also use these muscles to steer the snowboard in the right direction. At the end of your day snowboarding, you should also plan to stretch out in order to avoid major muscle aches and pains.

Since you won’t likely use your upper body muscles as frequently, you may want to supplement your snowboarding workouts with some upper body strength training.
